Maria Gomez Umaña

Born in Colombia and based in Ottawa since 2003. Maria has worked in studio art and community oriented art since she was an art student at Concordia University where she graduated. As a student Maria initiated and worked with the collective of ten women artists, ARTIFACT, to paint murals in Montreal and Nicaragua. In her art studio GAIA in Bogota, she devoted herself to clay work during 10 years, and explored other media such as lost wax, the production of self-hardening clay, worked with different resins, and published NATA, a magazine for ceramists. Maria was granted a British Council scholarship for her MA at University of Northumbria, England. She taught art at Universidad de los Andes, and Universidad de la Sabana. In Ottawa Maria has taught at Bishop Hamilton Montessori school, and at Algonquin College. She now works part time for the Coalition of New Canadians for Arts and Culture.
