meet the artists on Saturday August 17 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, open from August 15 to September 15
“Each artist has a very distinct style and use of media, which makes for a rich and diverse exhibition,” explains curator Jessica Sarrazin, “Each artist contributes something very unique to the show.”
Artist Zeynep Ergincan brings paintings, hand-painted ceramic tiles and necklaces, and sources her imagery of tulips, birds and fishes from her Turkish origins and the Anatolian decorative tradition. Twins and triplets also figure in her compositions, which are at once calm and slightly disquieting.
Artist Zivana Kostic’s metal embroidery works are an unusual combination of traditional needlework with a modern sensibility. Originally from Serbia, her ‘metal tapestries’ are made by weaving pins through silk. Her works have distinctive graphic patterns which have an ancient quality, almost as if you came upon them in an archaeological dig.
Artist Vladimir Frolov, from Russia, has created oil pastel images that vibrate with intense and very beautiful colour combinations. Built up with many small strokes, his works are abstract but are also reminiscent of landscapes and seem imbued with their own mystery and energy.
Artist Elbagir Osman, from Sudan, captures the experience of living inside the urban green space of Ottawa in his paintings. Focusing on the variations of light, colour and form, his paintings are impressionist in nature, but represent the contemporary landscapes of urban parkland.
